Workplace Impacts of Same-Sex Marriage

We’ve rounded out our panel with Daryl Herrschaft, Director of the HRC Workplace Project, and Deb Kinney, Equality California Board Member and Co-Chair of the Vote No on 8 Marriage Issues Political Action Committee.

Topics discussed will include:

From a workplace perspective - what’s changed? Any differences between how straight marriages and gay marriages are recognized in the workplace. How the recognition of gay marriage is impacting benefits like healthcare. The tax changes and implications resulting from the ruling. What we can learn from companies in other countries where gay marriage is recognized. What it means for out of state employees who get married in California. A Q&A session with leaders who were critical in advancing the marriage case. Participating companies include Intuit, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, PG&E, Trucker Huss, and more!

Breakout Session:

Trucker Huss will also be providing a breakout session after our main panel on the impact of same-sex marriage on employee benefit plans, in addition to how California law interacts with the restrictions imposed on employee benefit plans by the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Our speakers from Trucker Huss will discuss the steps all employers should take to make clear what benefits are available to same-sex spouses, and the steps employers may take to equalize retirement benefits for same-sex and opposite-sex couples without violating federal law. The discussion will focus primarily on retirement plans and will also touch on certain aspects of health and welfare and other employee benefit plans.
